The “s” and “sh” sounds in your vocal cut through too sharply. Certain notes suddenly sound boomy. You reach for an EQ, but cutting those frequencies makes the whole vocal dull.

AMATERAS Vocal Gentler is a two-band de-esser that gently reduces sibilance and boomy peaks only when they become too strong.

Play the vocal and press LEARN. It finds the frequencies, bandwidth and thresholds for you.

01 / FOR YOUR VOICE

Singing or speaking.
Tame the harshness and boom.

01 / VOCAL

Vocals & home recording

Tame harshness. Preserve brightness.

Close-miked vocals can have sharp sibilance and notes that suddenly sound boomy. Vocal Gentler reduces those frequencies only when they become too strong, helping preserve more brightness than a constant EQ cut.

02 / NARRATION & PODCAST

Narration & podcasts

Make longer listening more comfortable.

Sharp consonants and boomy resonances can become tiring over a long recording. Play the voice and press LEARN to find settings suited to the speaker.

03 / RECORDING

While recording

A smoother sound in the headphones.

With zero latency, you can use Vocal Gentler in the monitor path while recording. Give the singer a less harsh sound to perform with.

02 / HOW IT WORKS

Let it listen.
It finds where to work.

Play a sung or spoken passage, then press LEARN.

PLAY

Play the voice.

Choose a vocal or spoken passage that includes sibilant sounds.

LEARN

Press once. Let it listen.

LEARN analyses 20 seconds of audio. The first half finds the frequencies and bandwidth; the second half sets the thresholds. The button shows the remaining time.

READY

Fine-tune by ear.

The knobs update so you can see the settings it chose. Adjust THRESH to get the amount of control you want.

Press LISTEN to hear the frequency region each band is monitoring. Use it when adjusting FREQ to find where the harshness or boom is most audible.

Each GR meter shows how much gain reduction is happening. One press of UNDO restores all the settings from before LEARN.

03 / TWO BANDS

Boom and sibilance.
Two bands, separate control.

BAND 1 · PEAK (200 Hz–6 kHz) uses a bell-shaped cut to control frequencies that jump out of the voice. LEARN sets both its frequency and bandwidth (Q).

BAND 2 · SIBILANCE (3–10 kHz) reduces the high frequencies above its selected frequency to control sharp “s” and “sh” sounds.

Harshness does not always sit in one place. A voice can sound hard around 3 kHz and splashy around 8–10 kHz. Set BAND 1 near 3 kHz with a higher Q and BAND 2 near 8 kHz by hand to control them separately.

LEARN searches BAND 1 only up to 2.5 kHz. For this two-region approach to harshness, set BAND 1’s FREQ manually.

04 / WHY IT WORKS

Control the frequencies
only when they jump out.

A fixed EQ cut can tame sibilance or boom, but it stays active even when those frequencies are not causing a problem.

Vocal Gentler reduces them when they become too strong, then releases. This helps preserve the voice’s brightness and presence compared with a constant EQ cut.

Zero latency makes it suitable for monitoring while recording. Its response stays consistent across buffer sizes and during export, so the processing you hear while mixing carries through to the finished file.

LESS IS MORE, FOR THE VOICE.

When it comes to vocals, a lighter touch goes a long way.

05 / BEFORE YOUR COMPRESSOR

Before your compressor.
For a more natural response.

Sharp sibilance or a sudden burst of low-mid boom can make a vocal compressor react too strongly, causing audible pumping.

Place Vocal Gentler before your compressor to tame those peaks first.
The compressor can then follow the vocal more evenly, giving you smoother, more natural compression with the same settings.

The aim is not to reshape the whole voice with multiband compression.
Just to control the two frequency regions most likely to jump out.

07 / BEFORE YOU BUY

A few things
you may want to know.

Can I use it if I have never used a de-esser?
Yes. Play the voice and press LEARN. It finds the frequencies, bandwidth and thresholds for you.
Will it make my voice sound dull?
It reduces harsh or boomy frequencies only when they become too strong, then releases. This helps preserve brightness compared with a constant EQ cut. If it sounds overprocessed, raise THRESH.
Should Vocal Gentler go before or after my compressor?
We recommend placing Vocal Gentler first. It tames sibilance and boomy peaks before they reach the compressor, helping it respond more naturally.
Can I use it while recording?
Yes. It adds no latency, so you can use it in your monitor path while recording.
Are both Windows and Mac versions included?
Yes. One purchase includes installers for both Windows and macOS.
Is installation straightforward?
The Mac installer is notarized by Apple: double-click the .pkg file to begin. On Windows, a warning may appear the first time. Select More info, then Run anyway to continue.
Do I need an account or license activation?
No product account, activation hardware or online license activation is required. Install the plugin and start using it.
How many computers can I use it on?
You can install it on multiple computers that you personally own.
Will it work in my DAW?
It works in DAWs that support VST3 or AU. AAX is not currently supported.
Is there a trial version?
There is no trial version at present. If installation or operation fails on a supported system, contact support. We will help resolve the issue or provide a refund.
